Birding Trip Southern Mozambique
BIRDING TOUR 16th to 22nd FEB 2011 SOUTHERN MOZAMBIQUE
TOUR LEADER: Maans Booysen
We are back after a satisfactory birding tour to the Southern Mozambique. We traveled in one vehicle, and our group of 4 were: Philip Fry, Elmien Adendorf , Tana Coetzer, and Maans Booysen.
DAY 1
We left at 06h00 for the Komatipoort border where we crossed into Mozambique. We birded en-route to Honeypot Camp near Xai-Xai, where we stayed. Specials seen: Rufous-bellied Heron, , Rufous-winged Cisticola, Senegal Lapwing, African Hobby .
DAY 2
Birding in and around Panda seen Mashona Hyliota, Pale Batis, Collared Pratincole, Black-eared Canary, White-breasted Cuckooshrike, Red-faced Crombeck & Stierling’s Wren Warbler. Overnight at Makolobay Lodge.
DAY 3
Birding in and around Ponto Da Barra here we’ve seen: Pigmy Goose, White–backed Duck, Brown-headed Parrot. Wader watching produced: Crab-, Greater Sand- & Lesser Sand Plovers, Great Knot, Lesser Crested Tern, Terek Sandpiper, and Bar-tailed Godwit. Overnight at Makolobay Lodge.
DAY 4
Early morning Ponto Da Barra, Inhambane. : Lesser Crested Tern, Terek Sandpiper, Crab-, Greater Sand- & Lesser Sand Plovers, and Bar-tailed Godwit. Birding en-route to Massinga Böhm’s- & Mottled Spinetails, & Lemon-breasted Canary. Overnight at Makolobay Lodge.
DAY 5
Birding around Ponto Da Barra: main focus were wader watching: Lesser Crested Tern, Terek Sandpiper, Crab-, Greater Sand- & Lesser Sand Plovers, and Bar-tailed Godwit. Later Square -tailed Nightjar. Overnight Makolobay.
DAY 6
Early morning departure to Xai-Xai, birding en-route and seen: Olive-headed Weaver, Racket-tailed Roller, European-, African Hobby, Perregrine- & Eleonorus Falcon. Overnight at Honeypot Camp.
DAY 7
Early morning departure to border post and back to Centurion where we arrived late afternoon. Birding along floodplains we had seen: Black Coucal, Rufous-Bellied Heron, Southern Banded Snake- Eagle & Honey Buzzard.
